Mobile World Congress : HTC Desire

HTC were busy yesterday in Barcelona showing that the new boys in town mean business with a bunch of great phones will be hitting our shelves in the coming months which will make you think twice about getting an iPhone or Nokia.

The Nexus One appeared to be the next best thing but didn’t seem to live up to the task with reported faults and poor reviews, however HTC have come up with the Desire. Now basically it looks like a Nexus but HTC have said its got a “different construction” basically I think that means they’ve ironed out the problems.

Running 2.1 with a 3.7” OLED screen being run with Qualcomm’s 1GHz Snapdragon it has also been given HTC’s new optical trackpad. The main difference however is the UI. Flash Lite 4 software, a little menu that pops up in it’s browser allowing cut/copy/paste/translate and wiki text to mention a few tweaks. This phone will be available on Vodafone(who announced shortly after the release of the phone it will be carrying the three HTC phones we will talk about today) around the April/May time.

Mobile World Congress : Samsung Beam I8520

February 15, 2010 by admin

Obviously are straight out the blocks with the future of their phones in Barcelona. After the Wave S8500 comes the I8520 “Beam” phone.

Again we’ll see the new Super AMOLED this time at 3.7” of super sharp colourful greatness. However what differs this from the Wave is the “I” part of the model number. This means it’s OS will be Android. Packing a 5MP camera which shoots 720p video, 3G a-GPS and N-Standard WiFi.

What really makes this phone special though is sat right at the top of the phone……… A pico-projector! This allows you to show your videos and photos onto a white wall.It might well attract a business clientele is the ability to open MS Powerpoint documents and project them onto a wall, helping out in those board meetings and conferences. Now it won’t project HD video but you can hook it up to your HD telly and watch your captured movies.

Price and date are still TBC………

Sharp’s New AQUOS LED TV

January 18, 2010 by admin

Unveiled at CES last week Sharp are coming out with a new line of 1.6”deep AQUOS LED TVs and boy do they look good. As you all know we all love a good TV at Mighty Gadget and these do indeed look the bee’s knees as most LED’s do. What makes them different you might ask? Standard screens work as we all know with a red green and blue pixel. These add a fourth pixel, a yellow one, which improves the colours one can see on a screen.

The LC-LE810E will come in 3 sizes, 32”, 40” and 46” and will support 1080p output. The next model up is the LC-LE820 which is pretty much the same only coming in the larger 40”, 46” and 60”. The daddy of the series is the LC-LE920E. Again this comes in 40”,46” and 60” but has extras!! It has Aquos Motion 240Hz to reduce on motion blur and has the latest version of AQUOS Net(that means if you live in the US you get Netflix and and Twitter working on your box)

The TV’s should be out in March over here but we don’t have any prices as yet

Motorola Backflip heading our way

January 18, 2010 by admin

“Given the exceptional response to DEXT and Milestone to date, we look forward to adding Backflip to our smartphone range in EMEA…We will be making further announcements on availability and pricing of Backflip in North America, Latin America, Europe and Asia beginning in Q1 2010,”

The above is a quote from Motorola about the Backflip phone it showed at CES heading our way to European shores in the next few months. The phone itself isn’t much different from Motorola’s other smartphone the DEXT(Wi–Fi, HSDPA, 3MP Camera, MotoBlur UI) The Backflip again is powered by Android and shows it on a 3.1” screen. However what sets this apart is that the QWERTY keyboard flips out a bit like the N97’s(which was the best part of the Nokia).

Just the rough date of Q1 and no pricing details expect it soon and I can’t really see it being too expensive in comparision to the other better equipped “droid” phones but a reasonable looker none the less.

Dell Mini 3i Android Phone for the UK.

January 7, 2010 by admin

CES – Dell have confirmed its new Android powered phone will be coming to us here in the UK and was actually designed “specifically with the UK in mind” (that must be a first in the tech world). Although full details about the phone weren’t spilled, when questioned about how it will feature in the UK market, Dell had the answers. Unfortunately no release date or price

The Mini 3i packs a slimmed down version of Android and originally was only going to be 2G and without WiFi, but as we weren’t given the full details we’re hoping it might change to make it a reasonable phone to get and not the worlds slowest android phone(for internet surfing), but from what we do know it will have :

  • 3.5” 640×360 touchscreen
  • 3MP camera
  • GPS
  • Bluetooth
  • microSD slot

Continuing with 4G internet…..

December 15, 2009 by admin

It seems despite O2’s successful trial of LTE that we talked about yesterday, its them pesky Scandinavians always beating us to high speed internet(shakes fist). Swedish operator TeliaSonera have said today that they will launch the first 4G network. The company is going to trial it’s service with its users in the Stockholm area of Sweden and the Oslo area of Norway in the early part of 2010 with Finland coming shortly after.

As we said yesterday we’re going to be looking at the end of next year before we get 4G mobiles, TeliaSonera are allowing users to get download speeds up to 100Mbps using a laptop and a new Samsung mobile dongle.

Ericcsson has put the infrastructure together in Sweden whereas the Chinese company Huawei who’ve just done those tests near Slough we spoke of, are setting the Norwegian side up. Still its all good news and for once shows that Britain won’t be lagging too far behind for a change.

Warnlaser 20mw Razor Series Laser Review

December 15, 2009 by admin

Warnlaser recently sent us their 20mw Razor Series Laser to review. This is Warnlaser’s new series of violet lasers which actually use a genuine Sony Blue-Ray diode.

The Laser we are reviewing currently retails at $99.99/ £60 which does seem quite expensive though this is actually the cheapest in the Razor line with the 200mw laser retailing at $379.99!

However this is no cheap and tacky laser pointer you buy off the market, you can immediately tell it is quality by the quality black case you receive with it similar to what you would get if you bought an expensive pen.

The laser is quite large compared to cheaper laser on the market, and is about the size of a pen, though if you are using this for a presentation it is probably more comfortable to sue this way.

It also comes with an attachment which appears to spread the laser into multiple tiny dots, I am not sure if there is any practical application for this but I guess it looks pretty.

The beam itself is quite appealing and it does appear to have a good range, it manage to cover about 20m of my office with no problems.

Overall I think their is limited appeal to this gadget, it would make quite a nice stocking filler but at £60 it is a bit on the steep side for a stocking filler. If you spend most of your work time doing then presentations then yes this laser definitely will have some appeal.

O2 testing 4G

December 14, 2009 by admin

The mobile giant has been testing and been successful in the next stage of mobile information speeds. 4G mobile broadband can reach speeds up to 150Mbps. This will surely see an end to HSDPA and will see “LTE” as its known come to our mobile phones and other web devices in the future.

The Chinese company Huawei worked alongside in the UK near to where ’s headquarters are based(in the Slough Area) and managed to get download rates to the 150Mbps mark. Currently HSDPA can only get between 3.6Mbps or 7.2Mbps(but we all know this is just theoretical and never actually happens just like your home broadband).

This obviously isn’t going to be instantly out there in the market as its only the first successful test of LTE that has worked and apparently we’re looking at late 2010 at least before we see 4G dongles or phones out there, with more than enough capability of HD streaming over the mobile network. The speeds are also obviously a lot faster than current home broadband speeds so lets hope we can see an improvement there too.

HTC – The Android Lover

December 6, 2009 by admin

It seems that the Taiwanese mobile company will continue to use the platform with a supposed 20 new phones on the horizon. With the success of the Hero and the well reviewed HD2 this can only be a good thing.

The rumours have come from a text thread inside the new 2.1 ROM. Some of the names within have been seen before but some new have shown up. Since the first phone released the T-Mobile G1, have used the Google made OS in its phones. I personally have not used one but with the sheer volume of new phones using and big mobile manufacturers switching to it, it must be a solid performing OS leading to so many great reviews of phones.

The full list of names within the ROM are Bahamas, Bravo, DesireC, Dragon, Dream, Espresso, Halo, HeroCT, HeroC, Hero, Huangshan, Incredible, Legend, Liberty, Memphis, Paradise, PassionC, Passion, Sapphire and Supersonic. Obviously some of the names will be phones probably based in the East but it shows ’s future in the Mobile business.

The highly anticipated VAIO X Series is the world’s lightest notebook at just 655g, and measures 13.9mm thin, has a 11.1” X-black widescreen LCD and up to 16 hours of battery life.

It will also cost an arm and a leg at $1,499 (£933) and will ship with an SSD drive and Windows 7 Home Premium.

No word on what CPU it uses yet but at that price it better had be one of Intel’s new ULV CPUs.

Below is an interesting image from Sony showing the innards of the X Series.
