Toshiba Satellite T210/T230 Laptops

If you’re not a gamer, more of a business user chances are you want an ultra portable laptop that doesn’t leave out all the goods required for a useful, fast computer. Toshiba Satellite laptops have always been reliable and do tend to deliver in their field. Now they’ve release two new models to the line, the thinnest Satellite models yet a mere 17.6mm.

Firstly is the T210. Packing a Intel Pentium U5400 processor this 1.48Kg, 11.3” laptop comes with up to 3GB of memory, 250GB of storage and the usual Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. Bundled with Home Premium and a battery life that Toshiba have said will last 8.5 hours.

The second is the T230. A slightly heftier 1.75Kg this has a 13.3” screen, running an Intel Core i3 processor, up to 4GB of RAM and 500GB of hard storage and again Home Premium. What’s surprising is the battery life for this is exactly the same as its smaller counterpart.

Both the Toshiba Satellite T210 and T230 will be available in July, however no pricing has been confirmed.

Acer Aspire One 533 : HD netbook

June 14, 2010 by admin

The thing with netbooks in my opinion is they’re all well and good to carry about and do the odd bit of word processing or web surfingin a coffee shop, but they cant really do much else. has obviously noted this and has updated its range to allow HD video capabilities but also given them extra connectivity but still giving decent battery life.

The 533 has a 10.1” 1280 x 720 screen. Alright it’s not Full HD but 720p is still pretty good. Powered by either the Intel Atom N455 nor N475 you can opt for 1GB or 2GB of memory. It also has up to 250GB of storage. The standard WiFi comes too but you can also have the option to include 3G connectivity and the latest Bluetooth 3.0. Battery wise, there’s 3 options for you to pick from. The highest being a six-cell affair which will give up to 10 hours of use, but also will add weight.

Available in July there’s no price but with so many options to choose from they’re going to vary anyway.

Sony 3DTV out now

June 14, 2010 by admin

Last Friday saw the release of Sony’s first 3DTV the Bravia HX803. We spoke about it a few months back as one to watch, well now its here, ready for the World Cup and has been backed by an advert campaign shown during the World Cup matches ( if you haven’t seen it click here)

For a quick re-cap, HX803 is available in two screen sizes, 40” and 46” and packs Full 1080p HD with LED backlighting for great contrast ratios. They also include Sony’s Motionflow 200Hz Pro technology for super smooth images, Freeview HD, Bravia Internet Video and DLNA support for streaming. They also come packed with plenty of HDMI sockets too, 4 in all. The screen itself uses active shutter technology to give you better quality 3D images with special(expensive) LCD shutter glasses.

So although content to watch isn’t so readily available, Sony is adding some options for you to get your hands on some 3D viewing. The BDV-E370 is a 3D  Blu-Ray player which comes bundled with “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" Also the PS3 has recently updated to allow 3D games playback and when the NEX-3 and 5 cameras we spoke about last month come out they have the ability to take a high resolution panoramic shot that when shown on a 3D TV such as this, the image will appear in 3D.

Available now the screens start at a whopping £1799.

Nvidia TEGRA 2 : Hello Android, Bye Microsoft

May 20, 2010 by admin

The Tegra was the original powerhouse in the mobile world powering the soon to be Microsoft Kin Mobile phones and also that “not for Britain” PMP the Zune HD. With stiff competition from Qualcomm’s Snapdragon, mobile Intel chips and ARM, all good at what they do. TEGRA never failed to impress in its reviews and actions delivering application speed and HD video with ease.

Now Nvidia are planning to release the next TEGRA chip sometime this year, hoping to launch in conjunction with the 3rd generation of Android. Yes that’s right rather than sticking with Microsoft NVIDIA has obviously spotted the potential in Google’s OS and it’s rise in popularity in the mobile market. Co-Founder Jen-Hsun Huang has said that the future holds plenty of TEGRA powered Android phones and tablets to confirm this. He’s also gone on to point out that their main rival will be the iPad and it’s chipset the A4, currently the iPad’s chip and the planned next processor to be in the iPhone 4.0.

“The bar is pretty high for all the mobile players and they need a processor that can keep up with the A4. If not be much better than what the A4 can do because they have to take on the leader in the space.” – Huang on the Apple A4 processor

“I think the second generation Tegra has been doing incredibly well because Android is doing incredibly well. So we’re going to come to market with second-generation Tegra with the third generation Android.” Huang on Tegra and Android.

Certainly will make for a more interesting competition in the future for sure.

Sony NEX-7 : 1080p sequel rumoured already

May 17, 2010 by admin

It was only a few days ago when we showed Sony’s new micro four thirds Alpha NEX range cameras that were scheduled to come shortly. Well it appears Sony are already working on the next model in the range to beat the current great looking new range to enter the four thirds market and go to war with the likes of the Olympus PEN.

What the NEX-7 is said to have over it’s older brothers the NEX-3 and NEX-5 is a different in the sensor chips, allowing it to snap video at Full HD at 60fps and 24fps. Also it will increase it’s 720p capturing to 120fps and 60fps, allowing super slow motion capture of video. The other difference is the size with the NEX-7 coming in slightly larger. Now obviously if you’re in the micro four thirds market, size is probably what has swung you with DSLRs just that little bit too big. That aside it will still support the same E-mount lenses as the NEX-3 and NEX-5 however with an adaptor it will also support the A-mount lenses used by Sony’s Alpha DSLR cameras, sweet.

The only downside is it’s all rumour with Sony apparently making it official at the Photokina expo in September where we also expect to see Panasonic and Olympus show us their new models. Also that means there’s no date or price yet, watch this space though.

Dell Mini 5 “Streak” Tablet

May 17, 2010 by admin

With Ipad on the horizon it’s time for the adversaries to start flooding in. Although we’ve talked about a few in the past, of what will be challenging the iPad, with its imminent arrival, what will be its imminent competitors. Well Dell looks to be one of the first with its Mini 5 tablet. Also known as the “Streak” this was first shown at a San Franciscan tech show earlier in the year as well as a prototype demoed at CES. Now it’s almost here in Blighty.

Specs wise it definitely means business. Firstly there’s the 5” WVGA capacitive touchscreen(bit small in comparison to the iPad, not much bigger than your largest smartphones) which Dell says will be running the “latest version of Android” . Now does that mean 2.1 or the “coming soon” Android 2.2 (see next post for details on this). The slate will also have a 5Mp camera with flash and autofocus and the usual gubbins of WiFi, Bluetooth and that all important 3G connectivity. It will also have Amazon Kindle intergration for all your eBook requirements.

Dell has gone on to say that they have a distribution partnership with O2 Telefonica in Europe and the Streak should be with us in the next month with a later release in the States sometime in the Summer. However we don’t have any price details.

Sony Alpha Series : Now in Micro Four Thirds.

May 13, 2010 by admin

After the success of last years Olympus PEN (E-PL1 and E-PL2) it seems the market was open for the micro four thirds camera. If you aren’t sure what that is it’s basically a DSSLR style camera with interchangeable lenses but is the size of a compact camera. Now Sony is entering the frame with its trusty Alpha range of cameras with the NEX-3 and the NEX-5.

Both compact cameras in size, the NEX-3 is 25.4mm thin and the NEX-5 an even slimmer 24.2mm. The difference between the two is that the NEX-5’s body is made from Magnesium making it even lighter than the NEX-3, in fact Sony claim its the lightest camera where one can change the lens.

Both contain the new Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor. This means you can snap images at a fantastic 14.2MP and can record video at another fantastic 1080i. Both also have 3” LCD with a simple control system and even despite the sheer amount of menus and options, Sony claims it’s easy to get around.

Also available are 30 different lenses so you can play about to get that perfect shot, including the classic skateboard picture, fish-eye shot.

Available next month Sony is keeping quiet on the price, but I gues we’ll know soon seeing as June is only 3 weeks away.

Sony Vaio X Series Review

May 13, 2010 by admin

vaiox thumb Sony Vaio X Series Review Last September I had the pleasure of going to Berlin for the IFA and attending the Sony press conference where they revealed the astonishingly good looking Sony which is a 14mm thick, sub 800g, carbon fibre netbook.

Recently I was lucky enough to borrow the laptop for a review, and to be quite honest, as much I love Sony and love the looks I approached it with a certain amount of scepticism. Regardless of looks this is still a netbook and it is using an Intel Atom processor while costing in excess of £1500! I have previously reviewed the Dell Mini 9 and while it was a decent little netbook it was woefully underpowered and I was very worried the would be the same.

Anyway, when I received the laptop I have to say I was taken back by just how good it looks, the build quality and just how ridiculously light and thin it is, it is seriously like no other laptop I have ever held it is that light. It is also so thing the Ethernet port actually has to be click open because the main body is thinner than the Ethernet socket.

The next big thing i noticed is the way the keyboard is laid out, for Mac and Sony laptop users you are already used to it, but the key are separated apart, now i believe this is a love it or hate it style, personally I love it, it looks smarter and there seems to be less chance of typos especially on a smaller keyboard.

sony-vaio-x-e7

Turning on the was shocking to say the least, I was sort of expecting to be waiting around for the sluggish CPU to load but this is not the case at all. The comes with an SSD and the boot up time is seconds, far far faster than my Quad Core desktop that uses a mechanical velociraptor HDD.

When it comes down to general use the was surprisingly good, I could easily browse the net, use Digsby, go on Spotify at the same time without any obvious slow down. I also tried it out with various types of media this included some standard def AVIs and a 720p MKV and it managed them all fine. The fact that it managed to handle the MKV was quite a surprise as it used integrated graphics and normal Atom CPUs fail with HD content. It is worth noting that this is a 2.00 Ghz Atom with 2GB of ram, whereas the Dell I previously testing was 1.6 Ghz with 1GB of ram.

It is also worth noting the screen is excellent, it is paper thin (ok that’s an exaggeration) with a really crisp picture quality and more importantly a decent resolution of 1366×768.

sony-vaio-x-e4 I would say the only down side of the is the slightly pathetic speakers but to be quite honest, in a laptop this thin you can hardly expect loud speakers and a built in subwoofer.

In summery I love the Sony , a lot, but it is very hard to ignore the price tag. I think it is important to realise that this is clearly not aimed at the mainstream, it is aimed at people with too much money, commuters that need adequate performance while adding negligible weight to their bag. Personally if I was that rich and didn’t mind carry something slightly larger at double the weight I would chose the Sony Vaio Z Series where you literally get desktop performance in an ultra portable size.

iPad Data Tariffs announced : Orange, O2 and Voda

May 10, 2010 by admin

500x_ipad-uk-data

Now after our iPad officialdom release news t’other day, Apple themselves released the plans for data usage before the mobile carriers had done it themselves. Now I dont’t need to go into great detail about the plans as it’s plain for all to see in the image. What is surprising is how different the prices are and the options you get. Vodafone especially.

After looking at it long and hard, it obviously depends on what kind of usage you think you will use with your iPad. O2 offering more daily usage for your money than Orange but Orange offering more usage in a monthly frame. Vodafone’s tariffs appear to be ludicrous in comparison.

Obviously this is just the prices for the 3G/WiFi models of the iPad which cost more than the just WiFi so also bear in mind you will have to pay for the iPad itself.

Sony Vaio P Series : Ultra-Portable with GPS

May 10, 2010 by admin

With smartphone tech getting so good one often doesn’t need a PC to do his/her job or social networking, your phone will pretty much be able to cope with everything. It appears Sony are trying to grab some attention from the market with its new ultra-portable, small and light(only 600g) P Series notebook.

Firstly the basic specs. Now obviously with a lot more power than that of any phone, the Vaio P runs with an Intel Atom processor and 2GB of RAM. With an 8” screen running Windows 7 the Vaio P also has 64GB of Flash memory to keep it light and power-use friendly. Now what they’ve added to the Vaio P to give it smartphone-esque functionality is touchpad, GPS and an accelerometer. You can flick the pad through images and also turn it into portrait mode for easy viewing of things like ebooks. It’s also packing Everywair 3G allowing 7.2Mbps internet use wherever you are.

Available in an assortment of colours (green, pink, orange, black or white) it should be availbale around June time. No price details are available now but when the last P series came out they started at £849 for the lowest specced model. Expect extortion again.
