Sony Vaio J series : All in one Multitouch

The Sony Vaio J11M1E/B(try and remember that) is a brand new 21.5” Full 1080p multitouch screen all in one PC, just in time for the revised iMac and for all of us who opt for the traditional PC over the Mac. If you’re looking for a PC with looks and certainly saves on bulk space this could be for you.

Inside the all in one body the Vaio J specs speak for themselves. Not quite a top of the range PC but sufficient for everyday use.

  • Intel Core i3 Processor
  • 4GB RAM
  • 500GB HDD
  • Nvidia GeForce 310M Graphics
  • Windows 7 Home Premium
  • WiFi, Bluetooth and DVD writer

The main draw to this system though is the screen. a Full 1920×1080 affair so there’s plenty of room for plenty of windows. Sony has also developed a Media Gallery on the PC to make full use of the multitouch functions, allowing the user to browse its content with finger gestures, flicks and rotating motions. YouPaint is also an interesting software addition allowing you to paint and draw with your hands all over the screen.

Out next month there’s no price as yet, but we imagine you’ll need to invest in some screen cloths for those fingerprint marks :)

Android 2.2 : Froyo’s got skills

May 17, 2010 by admin

It was recently announced that Google wear about to update it’s fantastic Android OS to 2.2, codename Froyo, who’s release should be imminent. We’ve got some more word on its exciting new features to further expand what is not only a great OS but also one of the key players in the mobile and computing market.

Website Techcrunch had posted the details of the OS update giving an insight into what’s coming. The first thing to appear is USB tethering support. This will allow you to share yourAndroid running mobile’s 3G connection directly with your laptop(or desktop but that wouldn’t be very mobile) removing the need for a dongle or an upgrade to one with built in 3G. Secondly it will also have the ability to activate a hotspot sharing the connection wirelessly. Now on the Android market there’s apps that can do this for you but now it’s simple and easier and built straight into the OS.

With Android seemingly getting better and better with each incarnation, can Apple recreate some of it’s greatness in their next update. With the rise in Android use could the little green robot begin to take Apple’s customers. Lets wait and see.

Motorola Flipout : Twisty Phone, Not For Squares …….

May 13, 2010 by admin

Sorry bad joke, but when i first read about Motorola’s new novelty Android mobile, I couldn’t help but say “OHHHHHH FLIPOUT!”(a la classic Surfaris song) Anyway enough of me being a twit, the phone. Now with most phones packing the goods in terms of functionality another way to attract interest is the look, and Motorola have a funky one here with the Flipout, originally pencilled in as the “Twist”

The square body as suggested in the picture twists out to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard underneath a 2.8” screen. Now we don’t have the full specs of the phone but we are led to believe it will be powered by Android 2.1 and the image suggests it will have the MotoBlur social networking UI over it. We are also told it will have a 3.1MP camera and GPS.

With the success of Android phones this novelty phone could hit a niche market and do well providing the build quality is good and the price is reasonable. Unfortunately we don’t have a release date or price details.

Creative ZiiSound D5 speakers review

May 13, 2010 by admin

Recently I have had chance to play with some of Creative’s new products. The first being the Creative ZiiSound D5 Speakers, which to be honest I have heard nothing about until now, so for those of you not in the know:

The ZiiSound D5 speakers redefine the way music is to be enjoyed – wirelessly in pristine form. Sit back and enjoy an audiophile-like experience like no other has done. Our award-winning Bluetooth® technology present in our Inspire S2 Wireless 2.1 speakers are being ported over to the ZiiSound D5, bringing to you the best wireless audio can offer.

Pair up this premium one-piece speaker system effortlessly with any Bluetooth device, such as your notebook or mobile phone, and immerse in the music that fills up the whole room. Try it on with your iPhone, iPod or iPad, plug in the bundled transmitter to gain total control over the speakers and enjoy immaculate wireless music playback.

So basically we have quite an expensive (£279.99) but possibly quite a unique iPod dock with Bluetooth.

The Bluetooth functionality is quite an interesting choice as I was somewhat concerned about the possible sound quality issues due to the low bandwidth of Bluetooth. However at the same time it is quite a smart move as it moves the speakers away from just being an iPod dock and allowing them to work with anything that has Bluetooth functionality.

My first impressions were of its rather decent build quality, it is a very solid and simple one-piece design. It also comes with a small port to connect your iPod, which initially looked very odd as it is far to small to fit an iPod but in fact it fits the Bluetooth dongle which attaches to the iPod to provide Bluetooth functionality, and then the dongle has connections which will charge your iPod. Overall this works quite well.

My first test was with my 5th Gen iPod classic, I simply connected the Bluetooth dongle, selected my song and away it went. I was quite shocked at just how simple it was. I was sort of expecting to have to pair the device up as you do with so many Bluetooth devices, but it worked immediately.

It is also important to note that the Bluetooth dongle provided by Creative isn’t some general Bluetooth device, it actually uses the apt-X audio codec which apparently provides superior Bluetooth stereo audio, and I have to say it did sound pretty good.

ZiiSound-D5-2

Next up I decided to try using my Palm Pre to play music, this is slightly more complex than the iPod option as I had to keep my finger on the sync icon until it flashed then pair them up. This was quite easy though, if you have ever paired anything up in the past you will have no problems at all. In regards to audio quality via normal Bluetooth (rather than the apt-X audio codec) it was perfectly fine, I was expecting the quality to degrade quite a bit but it was pretty good, maybe not quite on par with the Creative.

Finally I tested the 3.5mm aux jack at the device’s rear. There is not much to say about this, it performed well just as you would expect!

In general the audio quality of the speakers was excellent, maybe not the best I have heard, but certainly excellent considering the size of the unit. The problem due to its smallish size the bass can be somewhat lacking. Don’t get me wrong though, the bass is pretty good thanks to an integrated bass port, but it is just not on par with a dedicated subwoofer. The unit itself can also get pretty loud if you want it too, especially considering its size, but at higher volume levels you may notice the bass not keeping up as much. I never experience the unit suffer from distortion or deterioration in quality with louder volumes, but I didn’t go all the way up to full volume.

Lastly it is worth mentioning all the controls on the unit are touch sensitive, which design wise may look nice but they are not always to everyone’s liking. There is only volume and sync options so you don’t need to worry too much.

ZiiSound-D5-3

In general I am not normally a fan of this type of product, I prefer larger bulky things that can go very loud. For example I use Acoustic Energy Aego M 2.1 speakers at the office, which are fantastic, but the sub is large and they are messy with all the wires. The ZiiSound D5 caters to a slight different market, they are stylish and minimalist while incorporating some pretty handy features. These speakers would be ideal for a bedroom or a kitchen, or just anyone that uses an iPod/iPhone all the time. If the price is not an issue I would be surprised if there are many iPod docks out there that could be the ZiiSound D5.

Macbook, Mackbook Pro and Macbook Air : New models

April 6, 2010 by admin

I’ve been doing my best to try and avoid iPad overload but its that time of year again when Apple seem to be very busy in releasing a slew of new products and updating its current lineup. With the release of iPad this last week and the apparent iPhone OS 4 event coming this week, Apple doesnt want its laptop fraternity to feel left out so its giving its Family a boost too.

Reports in Taiwan and Apple Daily claim the the standard , the Pro and the Air will be updated and available this month a month later than they were actually supposed to be due to a shortage of Intel chips. We don’t have too much info on the apparent changes but it’s believed the new will come in 3 sizes and the highest specced version will be bundled with a 640GB HDD. The battery life will also be improved to 8 hours after the iPad clocked an impressive 11 hours the needs to improve it’s own if it wants to stop its fans switching allegiance to the slate.

The was last updated in October of last year however the Air and the Pro haven’t since last June. An apparent email from the top dog Steve Jobs has led to this news and Apple stores having minimum stock and supplies of the laptops. If you’re wanting to get one, might be worth hanging on.

Palm Pre Plus and Pixi : UK Models Spotted

April 4, 2010 by admin

We spoke a while back about the Palm Pre Plus and Pixi appearing to get a US release and ot on in the UK and our Yankee cousins have been benefitting from having the two Palm webOS smartphones on sale for a while now. Well it appears the UK might actually be getting them as per usual too long after we should.

Website the :: UNWIRED had seen that the Global Certification Forum had approved two new but unknown Palm made models which would be usable on our 3G networks. However the two model names aren’t 100% going to be the Pre Plus and Pixi however it is strongly believed to be these phones as the model numbers bear a striking resemblance to the model numbers used before they were released stateside, even if it isn’t the Pre Plus or the Pixi then Palm have two new phones coming out.

However if they don’t appaear over here if they support the 3G network as its suggested, there’s nothing stopping you now grabbing one of these 3G enabled versions SIM free and slapping your own SIM in it, but it looks hopeful that no importing will be required.

Asus G73 : Gaming Laptop

March 29, 2010 by admin

The G73 laptop first debuted at CES in January and got quite a lot of attention due to its design. What, an aesthetically pleasing gaming laptop monstrosity, NEVER? Actually it does look quite nice, supposedly designed based on stealth fighters. Anyway its finally got some specs a date and a price tag so I’m going to give you the quick run-through.

The laptop itself is kitted out to match its Stealth Jet counterparts. a 17.3” FullHD screen is powered via Intel’s wonderful Core i7-720QM processor (thats a Quad-Core 1.6GHz 6MB Cache processor to you and me) a whopping 8GB of DDR3 delicious RAM, 1TB HDD but the obvious need for a gaming laptop, the GPU. Well it’s the ATI Mobility Radeon HD5870 which should easily play all the latest PC games at high graphics levels. Also it comes with a Blu-Ray drive.

Obviously this is Asus going for Alienware at the jugular, making a high end laptop with the looks to match only this one looks better than most if not all Alienware machines of old. It’s tasty Matte Black finish and 5 degree sloping keyboard look great.

Shipping next month to the UK this laptop will not make your pocket happy costing a massive £1899. However if you have the money or for some reason you don’t like gaming desktops, this could be the one for you.

Sony recently debuted it’s latest line of Sony Vaio E series laptops, a general use laptop aimed at the working and multimedia market and for those not to great with the computing line of tech, but also maybe those who don’t like to wait for a computer to boot up when all you need to do is surf the web.

It’s coming in two sizes, 14” and 17” with LED backlit screens, and the 17” will pump out FullHD quality images whereas the 14” will give 1600×900.Both come with 500GB HDD which can be increased to 1TB if you wish and both pack Blu-Ray optical drives. The 17” is quite a powerhouse pacing a Core i5, 4GB of RAM and an ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5650 with 1GB VRAM which will more than happily play the games of today. The 14” has a Core i3 and a lower spec ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5145 with 512MB VRAM GPU. They also both pack the usual gubbins of Wireless 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1, Motion Eye Camera, HDMI out etc

Now the smart things this lappy does is its “assist” button, “giving one-touch access to VAIO Care to help maintain, diagnose and troubleshoot your VAIO with just a few clicks.”(from Sony) and for those impatient people out there who simply can’t sit through the short boot up of windows when all you need to do is check your Facebook or search for a cheap holiday, the Vaio E has a web button which when pressed fires up a web browser without having to boot up Windows.

Available in May, no prices are available yet but as shown it will be available in a variety of colours.

Samsung BD-C8500M Blu-Ray

March 10, 2010 by admin

Quite possibly the best sounding Blu-Ray player at the moment, and you’ll think so too after reading about this “blighty”-fied masterpiece.

The Samsung BD-C8500M is a Blu-Ray player with everything and I mean everything you could possibly want or need in a media playing marvel. Not only will it play your Blu-Rays but inside it has a DVB-T2 tuner, yes thats right a “FREEVIEW READY TUNER.” Not only that it’s also packing a 500MB HDD to record it all onto and with the World Cup coming soon there’s no better way to get yourself ready for it with this.

Wait there’s more!! It also can connect to the Internet@TV platform. This allows the user to use an on-demand service including BBC iPlayer and that lovely LoveFilm movie streaming service. One can also stream media straight from your desktop, laptop or server(whichever you have) as it has and is DLNA certified.

Coming Soon, around April/May time we don’t have a price on it yet but I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on this despite the fact it should have a hefty price tag to match the weight of spec.
